| The Black and Tan aristocrat of the setter breeds, the Gordon Setter has a relatively small, but very loyal, cadre of owners and breeders throughout the world. Many of these people believe that one of the most favourable aspects of the breed is that it is less well-known or popular. While this has left us often explaining "no, it's not a cross between a Dobermann and Irish Setter", this relative anonymity has allowed us to pursue the betterment of the breed without the pressures of a huge market of Gordons and buyers. It has meant that breeders have had to plan each and every breeding, knowing that waiting homes were not plentiful. For misguided people, who perhaps want to have the breed more popular and to make numerous litters possible, this might not make any sense. However, many breeds have been damaged, if not ruined, by over-popularity. Gordon aficionados have, to date, not had to face this problem. However, what if you are really wanting a Gordon? Where do you go for information? Where can you get started? Many of us happened upon the breed almost by accident. My first Gordon was a gift. I learned about the breed as a result of, not prior to, his arrival. Since most would-be Gordon owners have to wait for that first puppy, that's the time to learn about the breed. Find out all you can and use the time to make sure the breed is right for you. No good breeder will be upset if you change your mind. Better to do it before you get that puppy. If the breed is perfect for you and your family, looking for more information is still a great way to pass the time while you wait. Hopefully, some of the information on this site will be of use. Our links page will also provide you with sites to visit. If there's information we haven't thought to provide, please let us know. Building our site will be a long term project so we'd welcome your ideas on how to improve it. The links from this page provide some "generic" Gordon Setter information, drawing from other sources, some with my own personal commentary. |
