How do I become a member?
In order to become certified, the dogs must pass a therapy dog pet obedience/control evaluation which can be administered by any professional dog trainer. You do not have to attend a formal "pet-provided therapy" training class.
We also require our prospective members to perform 10 hours of supervised visits at a facility of their choice. (See LOAL Visit Evaluation and LOAL 10 Hour Visit Record.) For example, you can request that an activities director in an assisted living facility supervise you and your pet while you make your first few visits. Once you have completed evaluations, you'd be eligible for certification through our organization.
You may want to print out the LOAL Membership Application form.
Our forms have been revised as of March 1, 2007. The new forms are on the website. Applications for membership submitted after May 31, 2007 must be on the new forms and will be returned to you, if you do not use the new forms. Applications submitted after May 31, 2007 may not submit the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test instead of the LOAL Control Evaluation (Dog Obedience/Control Evaluation).

What are the benefits of membership?
As a member of The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy you are covered by the groups insurance plan during your visits or other therapy pet work.
Your dog will be issued a special vest and I.D. tag to wear after he receives his certification. This vest lets people know that this animal has received special training to work as a volunteer.
Both you and your pet will be issued ID cards which you should carry or where whenever you visit a facility.
Once you become a member you will receive a quarterly newsletter. This is a great way to share stories and information and keep in touch with other members.
