A little bit more...'Australian History"

It is generally accepted that the first Gordons imported to Australia from the UK were the bitch 'Dido and the dog "Ponto" around 1865 by Mr. Lachland C. Mackinnon. Records also show that Mr. Haddon of 'Heronwood' Kennels imported 'Young Rex' and then, in 1889, 'Heather Spark' along with Mr H Nicholson who imported 'Heather Bess'.

Although these dogs are known to be in the ancestry of many Gordons in Australia today it is also known that five Gordons were imported from England to Victoria where they were bred from and used for shooting. (It is interesting to note that a Gordon is said to have been taken overland by an explorer in about 1904.)

Over the ensuing years we have had a number of imports brought in to Australia to enhance the gene pool, which was so necessary in a country as isolated as ours. Some have had a huge impact on the breed, others none at all, but all those people who had the foresight to make this effort and go to the expense (importing to Australia is a very costly exercise taking into account distances and quarantine) to ensure the breed's future here and to help create the wonderful Gordons we have in Australia today should feel very proud.
